I didn't want to launch again before I was 100% ready, so this post is a good sign :) I'm back and better than ever with a new and improved flow hood, new lab and more efficient processes that will benefit everyone.
I've made several really awesome connections here in Austin so far, getting settled in and getting back to work! Oh how I've missed you all so dearly. It's nice to be back. While not much has changed with new varieties YET, over the next week or two, expect to consistently find new varieties added to this list :)
Some of the new improvements include being able to accept more forms of payment, ensure order accuracy, and will help me out soooo much with inventory control, an admitted fault of mine that I've been working on for over a year now.

While "true" albino's are just a mutation, this variety gets it's name from the leucistic trait of having less pigment than other varieties, appearing completely white when mature. One of the all time most popular varieties I've had the pleasure of offering!

Originating from the Amazon rain forest, this variety is known to produce large,dense fruits in the wild, and certainly an interesting study under the scope :)
B+
Pronounced "Be Positive"!...Or at least that's what I like to say. The "+" is for the size! Looks a lot like Golden Teacher, only bigger. A favorite among beginning and advances mycologists alike and other than GT, probably the most popular variety.
Blue Meanie
This is the cubensis variety, not to be confused with Pan Cyan, the original Blue Meanie. One of my most popular varieties when it's in stock!

From the Chitwan jungle of Nepal, these are picture perfect under the scope.
Golden Halo
Really interesting study and you'll see why this one earns it's name. Darker on the inside, golden on the outer ring...looks like a halo!

With genetics from Pacific Exotica Spora (PES), this variety has a few stories to go along with it. Really interesting study if you care to look them up, but it was originally thought to be a cubensis/azurescens hybrid, accounting for the "A" in PESA. After much controversy, most identify this variety as Amazon or Amazonian.
PES Hawaiian
One of the wider caps in the species, PES (Pacific Exotica Spora) Hawaiian are uniquely pleasant to look at under the scope. One of the quickest movers on the slide, and easily one of my favorites to study!
Red Boy
So appropriately named, this variety actually drops red spores! Super interesting study under the scope!
Rusty Whyte
Another leucistic variety, these always look super cool!
Treasure Coast
First collected in the southern Gulf Coast in Florida, earning it's name from the number of shipwrecks in the area, and perhaps one of the most resistant varieties out there!
Z-Strain
Much like Golden Teacher, but this variety seems to have some great positive characteristics that sets it aside. Very fast and aggressive under the scope, this one will not disappoint!
THE FOLLOWING EXOTICS ARE NOT PART OF THE 5/$30 MIX-n-MATCH DEALIO, but can be added to any order for $10 as an add-on. These are NOT cubensis, and NOT recommended for beginners.
****Psilocybe Azurescens***\*
Originally made popular by my favorite mycologist of all time, Paul Stamets, this is known to be the most potent of any mushroom species discovered to date. It's name comes from the bluish (Azure) tint active species get when bruised. This variety is also NOT for beginners, as it is a more difficult study and requires completely different conditions to observe on a slide.

These tiny guys pack a big punch, mostly in tropical areas. Unlike the Blue Meanie cubensis variety causing much confusion, this is the actual species also known as Blue Meanie.

All syringes are 12cc/mL and come capped with a sterile tip cap, and also include an 18ga blunt tip needle and alcohol pads. Syringes are made in a lab grade environment and the utmost care and attention is the highest priority to be sure they are sterile. Anything exposed to an open air environment is subject to contamination, but I take every precaution possible to minimize this risk. I cannot "guarantee" they are 100% sterile, but I can guarantee that if you have an issue, I will make it right. I really do love to help, and if something happens, I'd like to know about it so I can fix the issue instead of you getting frustrated or giving up!
To ensure equal quantity of spores in each syringe, and for adequate suspension of the spores in the solution, I use a magnetic stir plate. Very often, this does such a good job of breaking up clumps of spores that it will appear to be sparse. THIS IS NOT AN ISSUE! There are still a TON of spores in each syringe, even if you can't see them individually (though most of my syringes appear to have a very good amount of visible spores...even with my horrible eyesight!). You can compare and contrast to see the blackish/purple tint to ensure every syringe is packed with spores. If a spore clump forms during transportation, simply give it a good flick with your finger and vigorously shake to break it up or free it from clinging to the wall of the syringe before examining.
Syringes ship in individual bags clearly labeled as to specific variety and born on date, bubble wrapped and shipped through USPS tracked shipping (discreet) within 24 hours of payment. I send tracking info soon after payment and give updates along the (super quick) way.

Stellar Lumens vs Other Cryptocurrencies
• Lumens vs. Bitcoin: Jed McCaleb spoke at Distributed Markets in 2017 about the advantages, but more importantly, the disadvantages of Bitcoin. Listen to the talk here. Jed said, “Bitcoin is this awesome innovation. The first thing it does is converts a real world resource, electricity, into a digital asset. So it takes something from the real world and puts it into the digital realm. The second thing it does is provides immutable public record. It’s basically a database that everyone can see but no one change arbitrarily… That’s great, Bitcoin solves the double spin problem [ of proving possession and transmitting volume]… [However, to fix the problems of bitcoin] you might think well maybe we’ll just kind of keep adding [software] to Bitcoin until we get there, but that’s not really the way software works. You want to have the design from the beginning and solve these simple issues. Bitcoin was designed to be a new currency, it wasn’t really designed to be this unifying universal payment network. So that’s what Stellar does. It solves these three remaining issues.”
• Lumens vs. Bitcoin #2: According to wired.com, "Bitcoin mining guzzles energy - and it's carbon footprint just keeps growing." Wired says "Today, each bitcoin transaction requires the same amount of energy used to power nine homes in the US for one day... The total energy use of this web of hardware is huge—an estimated 31 terawatt-hours per year. More than 150 individual countries in the world consume less energy annually. And that power-hungry network is currently increasing its energy use every day by about 450 gigawatt-hours, roughly the same amount of electricity the entire country of Haiti uses in a year." Because Stellar is based on a consensus algorithm rather than mining, it takes much less energy to run the Stellar network. The Poseidon Foundation decided to build their platform on Stellar rather than Ethereum or Bitcoin because of this (twitter source).
• Lumens ICO tokens vs. Ethereum ICO tokens: According to Stellar.org, "traditionally, ICO tokens have been issued on the Ethereum network in the form of ERC20 tokens. ERC20 tokens are easy to issue and are infinitely customizable using Ethereum’s smart contracting language. However, recent events have highlighted and exacerbated some weaknesses of the network, including slow transaction processing times for the network during ICOs and increasingly expensive gas prices (by fiat standards) for transactions and smart contract execution. Moreover, many organizations require only basic tokens; they adopt the risk of Ethereum’s Turing complete programming language without taking advantage of many of its benefits."
"While Ethereum has the most expressive programming capabilities, we believe Stellar is the best choice for ICOs that do not require complex smart contracts. Stellar’s primary goal is to facilitate issuing and trading tokens, especially those tied to legal commitments by known organizations, such as claims on real-world assets or fiat currency."
• Stellar vs. Ethereum #2: The median transaction time on Stellar is 5 seconds, compared to approximately 3.5 minutes on Ethereum (source). Stellar has a negligible transaction fee (.00001 XLM ~= $0.0000002) with no gas fee for computation, while depending on the complexity of the computation, the median cost for a transfer on the Ethereum network is $0.094. Security: While both Stellar and Ethereum run on a decentralized network, the Stellar network has fewer security pitfalls. Stellar uses atomic transactions comprised of simple, declarative operations while Ethereum uses turing complete programming capabilities which produces less auditable code and greater risk of exploitable vulnerabilities (source). Recently, a security flaw in the Ethereum network froze millions of dollars. According to Mobius ariticle written by David Gobaud, "On November 6, 2017, Github user deveps199 'accidentally' triggered a bug in Parity, a popular Ethereum mult-sig wallet, that froze more than $152 million in Ether across 151 addresses. The bug impacted several token sales including Polkadot, which has had ~$98 million out of its recent $145 million sale frozen."
"Mobius had none of its ongoing pre-sale Ether frozen because we do not trust Ethereum’s Smart Contract based multi-sig wallets given the vast Turing complete attack surface and did not use one. Security broadly is one of the main reasons the MOBI token that powers the DApp Store is a Stellar Protocol token and not an Ethereum token."
• Lumens vs. Ripple: According to Wall Street Bitcoin Exchange, "Many investors like to compare the company [Stellar] to Ripple, and there are a lot of similarities, being that some of the founders worked on the Ripple team. In what can now be looked at as another blockchain development drama that plays out on chat boards and in interviews all across the globe. Stellar declared they fixed Ripple’s problems with their hard fork, however, Ripple has failed to admit to any of the flaws in its design that the Stellar team has pointed out." The article concludes by saying, "We Choose XLM Over XRP For 2018. That is why we are going with Stellar Lumens over Ripple in our portfolio for the rest of 2017 and 2018. After holding Ripple for a long time this year, it just never seems to make the big break like other names with bigger market caps like Bitcoin Cash, Dash, and Litecoin have. While we are holding on most all our larger market caps, we feel that Stellar Lumens will be one of the break out coins for 2018."

Peter Surda published his master's thesis in 2012, entitled: "Economics of Bitcoin: is Bitcoin an alternative to fiat currencies and gold?"
At the time I had been participating in discussions about economics on the old Mises.org discussion forums (before they got replaced) in mid 2012.
In my opinion, this was the best place that one could find scholarly and advanced economics-based discussion of the viability of bitcoin, although we also discussed your other standard libertarian and ancap topics, but this was the best place on the internet for Austrian-econ to discuss bitcoin.
I myself had heard about bitcoin when it bubbled to $32 the year before in 2011, and had actually CPU mined it for like one day back then before realizing it wasn't very effective and stopped mining without looking deeper into it (had I got into GPU mining then I coulda been rich!).
I became busy with other aspects of life at that and didn't return to bitcoin for a year, not until these forums.
In these forums the question was posed on whether bitcoin could be a good currency.
What followed was an epic discussion and analysis of both what money actually is and whether bitcoin qualified as money, and whether bitcoin could be a GOOD money therefore, over the course of the next six months.
There developed three camps during this discussion, those who thought bitcoin COULD be a good money, those who thought it definitely could not be money or would be a terrible one, and those who were dispassionate observers or just weren't very sure.
I was fairly neutral on the topic at first, but I had long been interested in the theory of money as a reader in economics. I quickly found myself arguing that bitcoin could serve as a money and would actually be a great money, perhaps the best we've ever found.
Several of us were in this pro-bitcoin camp, including Peter Surda, and it wasn't until much later that he published his thesis here and we realized who he was.
I can honestly say that, due to that period of arguing about bitcoin for literally months, that we in that forum turned over bitcoin from absolutely every angle, and considered everything there is to think about in terms of bitcoin and money, and that I therefore have a very strong foundation on which to say that I have strong confidence that cryptocurrency CAN be an absolutely fantastic money for the world.
And it has formed the foundation of my faith and advocacy in cryptocurrency ever since.
It is also why I chose BCH over BTC now, because only a permissionless, decentralized currency has a chance of being the financial revolution the world needs.
Surda's thesis focuses on a couple aspects and economic arguments. That the value and utility of a network is due to the network effect created by it.
That is, all the participants and uses that it has will tend to create value in the coin itself, to raise its price over time.
BTC, thereby is destroying its value through giving away all those use-cases to BCH.
We should happily accept that BTC wants to ignore those use-cases and users and simply build a cryptocurrency capable of serving those needs.

His conclusion:

This thesis is about the analysis of Bitcoin as money, whether it poses a serious alternative to fiat currencies or gold. In the theoretical part, I tie together academic research and views from within the Bitcoin community, based on a libertarian point of view. The results are that Bitcoin conforms to the Austrian theory of the catallactic origin of money. It already crossed the obstacles that are the praxeological preconditions for the function of a medium of exchange (the emergence of price, and the emergence of liquidity), as described in the Mises' regression theorem. It is at a very early stage of evolution, users and service providers facing a high level of uncertainty, however, the ecosystem already shows a high level of specialisation, and the services are maturing.
Bitcoin can, hypothetically, eventually evolve into money through the behaviour of market actors. It can also, hypothetically, gain the functions of store of value and unit of account (assuming it does not have them already). Currently, there are areas where Bitcoin has a comparative advantage over other media of exchange, mainly through the reduction of transaction costs in the narrower sense. The existence of this comparative advantage probably means that the critical mass for the network effect has been reached and at this level, the Bitcoin ecosystem is self-sustaining.
If this comparative advantage persists, network effect can increase the adoption of Bitcoin, and thus make the evolution into money more likely. Whether, or to what extent, this comparative advantage persist, depends on the strength and flexibility of the Bitcoin ecosystem, the level of regulation, the emergence of new competitors (e.g. new cryptocurrencies) and the stability of the fiat money.
If Bitcoin becomes money, it would most likely present a system with an inelastic supply and thus conform to the ideal money as viewed by the gold standard branch of the Austrian School. This would be achieved without a legislative reform and irrespective of the existence of fractional reserve banking. In this respect, it is superiour both to fiat money and gold.

Notice this key passage:

Currently, there are areas where Bitcoin has a comparative advantage over other media of exchange, mainly through the reduction of transaction costs in the narrower sense.

This means that bitcoin (was) cheaper to transact with than any other form of financial instrument. Was until Blockstream got complete control over it.
If you want to know why the banks and governments took bitcoin seriously and somehow got Core / Blockstream to destroy the low transaction-cost aspects of BTC, it is precisely this.
A low transaction-cost currency would utterly destroy the credit card and transaction processing business, an industry that reaped $42.4 billion in interchange transaction fees in 2016, for instance. (Wouldn't destroy their loan business, just their transaction fees business). And that's ignoring the fees they charge just for the privilege of using their credit cards, worth as much as $100 billion a year.
These companies are charging as much as 3% effectively on all purchases, both as transaction costs and in insurance fees for chargebacks. It would destroy that gravy train completely, because merchants face zero chargeback risk when paid in cryptocurrency.
Surda concludes that the low transaction-cost comparative advantage of bitcoin is the sole reason why it's self-sustaining. This makes sense, if you have a trade vehicle that isn't significantly better in some way than what you're currently using, you don't bother using it.
While Blockstream is busy trying to become Paypal 2.0, we need to focus on the only thing that matters: lower transaction costs and all the ways we can return VALUE to actual users because of this.
Yes we need merchants, but merchants need buyers. We need the entire 3rd world using BCH-bitcoin. If we can get an M-Pesa sized foot in the door somewhere, we would be doing amazing work for that population.

The New York Agreement (NYA) was the official start of the SegWit2X project. It was signed by some 50 companies and individuals.
Some of those dropped off along the way. Six of them signed the "surrrender" message to the development list.

I feel like cryptocurrency always gets a bad wrap around here. Cryptocurrency is a fantastic thing that can really benefit all of us. As a member of the PCMR, the rising GPU prices are an issue, but give this a read. I've compiled a couple of sources and put my own arguments.

1. Decentralization

-Decentralized currency can grow to a larger market cap than any national fiat.
The dollar is the "world's reserve currency" but through most of the world you cannot and will not ever be able to spend it.
A decentralized currency is the first truly international money since gold. As a result it could potentially become larger than national currencies. The larger the market cap, the more potent the currency.

2. No Identity Theft

-Identity Theft: When you give your credit card to a merchant, you give him or her access to your full credit line, even if the transaction is for a small amount. Credit cards operate on a “pull” basis, where the store initiates the payment and pulls the designated amount from your account. Cryptocurrency uses a “push” mechanism that allows the cryptocurrency holder to send exactly what he or she wants to the merchant or recipient with no further information. ^[2]

3. Access to Everyone

-There are approximately 2.2 billion individuals with access to the Internet or mobile phones who don’t currently have access to traditional exchange, these people are primed for the Cryptocurrency market. Kenya’s M-PESA system, a mobile phone-based money transfer, and microfinancing service recently announced a bitcoin device, with one in three Kenyans now owning a bitcoin wallet. (Let me repeat that again. 1/3) ^[3]

4. Fraud

-Individuals cryptocurrencies are digital and cannot be counterfeited or reversed arbitrarily by the sender, as with credit card charge-backs. ^[4]
This only scratches the surface of the advantages of cryptocurrency. I'll go into depth a little bit of a few cryptocurrencies that I currently hold.

Stellar Lumens (XLM)

-They cannot be mined, that's a pretty big plus in this community.
-XLM is the backbone of the Stellar Network. they contribute to the ability to move money around the world and to conduct transactions between different currencies quickly and securely.
-Base fee of 0.00001 Lumens, or XLM. That's 0.000009 USD (0.0009 cents) as of now.
-FairX, an upcoming exchange, will allow you to purchase pretty much any cryptocurrency with your native country's currency. FairX is backed by IBM.

OmiseGo (OMG)

-They cannot be mined
-They strive to make sending currency much easier than it currently is by allowing transactions between different currencies and platforms. Security is also a main point of OMG.

Now to the main point...

-The reason /pcmasterrace is against crypto is because of miners raising the price of GPUs. This is an issue at the moment, but miners are moving to ASIC miners as opposed to purchasing high-end GPUs. As for the cryptos that are ASIC resistant, it won't be nearly as big of a deal. Ethereum for example, is a big cause of the GPU price inflation. As the price of ETH rises and the market grows, mining ETH with GPUs just won't be profitable. Soon enough, it won't be an issue. I'm not saying that you shouldn't get mad at miners, but I am saying that they are supporting a growing and developing market that has a very large chance of helping all of us in the future. Take a look at /CryptoCurrency in your free time, who knows, you might like it. You might even be able to make some money from it.

• SendX - Singapore based SendX, in partnership with Stellar, is the better way to move money worldwide. The SendX team believes that the future of transactions is decentralized and distributed, bringing true equity to everyone across the value chain.
• VoguePay - VoguePay, with offices in the United Kingdom and Nigeria, is partnering with Stellar to become the cheapest and most efficient way to send money between the United Kingdom and Nigeria. In the coming months, they expect to expand this service to other selected African countries.
• HashCash - Hashcash consultants build financial solutions for banks and financial institutions over blockchain. We leverage the Stellar platform to build products that vastly improve the remittance and payments experience for banks and their customers. Transfers happen lightning fast at a fraction of current rates and operational cost is significantly reduced. HashCash is headquartered in India, with operations across South Asia and the Gulf.

Stellar Lumens vs Other Cryptocurrencies
• Lumens vs. Bitcoin: Jed McCaleb spoke at Distributed Markets in 2017 about the advantages, but more importantly, the disadvantages of Bitcoin. Listen to the talk here. Jed said, “Bitcoin is this awesome innovation. The first thing it does is converts a real world resource, electricity, into a digital asset. So it takes something from the real world and puts it into the digital realm. The second thing it does is provides immutable public record. It’s basically a database that everyone can see but no one change arbitrarily… That’s great, Bitcoin solves the double spin problem [ of proving possession and transmitting volume]… [However, to fix the problems of bitcoin] you might think well maybe we’ll just kind of keep adding [software] to Bitcoin until we get there, but that’s not really the way software works. You want to have the design from the beginning and solve these simple issues. Bitcoin was designed to be a new currency, it wasn’t really designed to be this unifying universal payment network. So that’s what Stellar does. It solves these three remaining issues.”
• Lumens vs. Bitcoin #2: According to wired.com, "Bitcoin mining guzzles energy - and it's carbon footprint just keeps growing." Wired says "Today, each bitcoin transaction requires the same amount of energy used to power nine homes in the US for one day... The total energy use of this web of hardware is huge—an estimated 31 terawatt-hours per year. More than 150 individual countries in the world consume less energy annually. And that power-hungry network is currently increasing its energy use every day by about 450 gigawatt-hours, roughly the same amount of electricity the entire country of Haiti uses in a year." Because Stellar is based on a consensus algorithm rather than mining, it takes much less energy to run the Stellar network. The Poseidon Foundation decided to build their platform on Stellar rather than Ethereum or Bitcoin because of this (twitter source).
• Lumens ICO tokens vs. Ethereum ICO tokens: According to Stellar.org, "traditionally, ICO tokens have been issued on the Ethereum network in the form of ERC20 tokens. ERC20 tokens are easy to issue and are infinitely customizable using Ethereum’s smart contracting language. However, recent events have highlighted and exacerbated some weaknesses of the network, including slow transaction processing times for the network during ICOs and increasingly expensive gas prices (by fiat standards) for transactions and smart contract execution. Moreover, many organizations require only basic tokens; they adopt the risk of Ethereum’s Turing complete programming language without taking advantage of many of its benefits."
"While Ethereum has the most expressive programming capabilities, we believe Stellar is the best choice for ICOs that do not require complex smart contracts. Stellar’s primary goal is to facilitate issuing and trading tokens, especially those tied to legal commitments by known organizations, such as claims on real-world assets or fiat currency."
• Stellar vs. Ethereum #2: The median transaction time on Stellar is 5 seconds, compared to approximately 3.5 minutes on Ethereum (source). Stellar has a negligible transaction fee (.00001 XLM ~= $0.0000002) with no gas fee for computation, while depending on the complexity of the computation, the median cost for a transfer on the Ethereum network is $0.094. Security: While both Stellar and Ethereum run on a decentralized network, the Stellar network has fewer security pitfalls. Stellar uses atomic transactions comprised of simple, declarative operations while Ethereum uses turing complete programming capabilities which produces less auditable code and greater risk of exploitable vulnerabilities (source). Recently, a security flaw in the Ethereum network froze millions of dollars. According to Mobius ariticle written by David Gobaud, "On November 6, 2017, Github user deveps199 'accidentally' triggered a bug in Parity, a popular Ethereum mult-sig wallet, that froze more than $152 million in Ether across 151 addresses. The bug impacted several token sales including Polkadot, which has had ~$98 million out of its recent $145 million sale frozen."
"Mobius had none of its ongoing pre-sale Ether frozen because we do not trust Ethereum’s Smart Contract based multi-sig wallets given the vast Turing complete attack surface and did not use one. Security broadly is one of the main reasons the MOBI token that powers the DApp Store is a Stellar Protocol token and not an Ethereum token."
• Lumens vs. Ripple: According to Wall Street Bitcoin Exchange, "Many investors like to compare the company [Stellar] to Ripple, and there are a lot of similarities, being that some of the founders worked on the Ripple team. In what can now be looked at as another blockchain development drama that plays out on chat boards and in interviews all across the globe. Stellar declared they fixed Ripple’s problems with their hard fork, however, Ripple has failed to admit to any of the flaws in its design that the Stellar team has pointed out." The article concludes by saying, "We Choose XLM Over XRP For 2018. That is why we are going with Stellar Lumens over Ripple in our portfolio for the rest of 2017 and 2018. After holding Ripple for a long time this year, it just never seems to make the big break like other names with bigger market caps like Bitcoin Cash, Dash, and Litecoin have. While we are holding on most all our larger market caps, we feel that Stellar Lumens will be one of the break out coins for 2018."

1 It’s always a challenge for an ophthalmologist, an eye surgeon, to address an audience like this, who knows far more than me about financial services and financial institutions.
2 Mr Stephen Aguilar-Milan is a futurist with the World Futures Society, and he has a hypothesis that every 50 years or so, there is a major technological wave. My hypothesis is that every time there is major technological wave, you have a period of intense disruption, a period of increased opportunities, a period of great inequality and robber barons, and it takes some time before the middle class adopts the same technologies and creates more wide spread prosperity. My thesis tonight is that we are in the midst of such a wave.
3 So let’s start with Stephen’s hypothesis. If you go back to 1770 in England, the time of mills and canals – the canals that you can still see in London and England – that was the start of cottage industries, of early industrialisation in England. The fact that it happened in England gave it a head-start in the Industrial Revolution.
4 You move forward another 40 or 50 years from there, you get to the early 1800s. The pivotal invention then was the steam engine, and with the steam engine came railways and railroads, and many fortunes were made by the successive rollout of railways in England, Europe and America.
5 Fast forward another 50 years to about 1870 – that was the age of steel, electricity and heavy engineering. That was also the age of large ocean-going ships, warfare, refrigeration and trade opened up on an industrial scale.
6 The 4th wave began sometime around 1910. That was really about oil, and oil opened up the possibility of the automobile, and especially in America, the age of the car, interstate highways, and the long American love affair with the car and all that it represents in popular culture.
7 If you stop to think about these waves, and think about some names associated with these waves – if you go back to 1910 and think about oil, what names come to mind? For instance, Rockefeller – that was how huge fortunes were made. If you go further back to the age of steel, the American name that comes to mind is Carnegie, and related to that, Mellon, the bank. And if you go back to the age of the steam engine and railways, there are pantheons of tycoons, technologists and early-adopters who made huge fortunes because suddenly, everything changed, and there was a period of big disruption - old industries were gutted, and new industries were made. The people who got in first made huge fortunes.
8 Now let’s move forward to the 5th wave. You can roughly date the 5th wave to the late 1940s, after the Second World War, in particular the invention of the transistor, which replaced the old vacuum tubes. By accident or design, this started off in Silicon Valley. I think it was William Shockley who moved back to Palo Alto from New York, because he had an ageing mother in Palo Alto. At the same time, Stanford University was also trying to find and define an opportunity for commercialising its academic pursuits, and finding daily relevance for the discoveries in the labs and the work that its professors did. The transistor in turn led to an explosion of electronics, and in a later wave, electronics in turn led to computers and much of what we know of modern electronics today. So starting from the transistor in 1947, we move all the way to today.
9 If you believe this theory of 50 years, we are clearly past 50 years. This is where I will take a risk, and posit that there is a 6th wave. The difference in technological waves is that they don’t come and go; each wave builds successively on preceding waves, and this 6th wave is actually about connectivity - meaning that the transistor led to the CPU, which led to the computer and now it is about the Internet, the World Wide Web, big data analytics, the Internet of Things, and telecommunications. We are moving beyond hardware to bits and ideas, and we are now living in a world which is far more densely connected than ever before.
10 Today, a lot of the political polemic is about inequality. My favourite theory is that inequality is not the result of a covert right wing conspiracy, but really just another episode of the fact that there is a major tectonic technological wave sweeping through our society, and the people who get it, the few people who understand and are first able to capitalise, will make fortunes as large, in historical terms, as the Rockefellers, the Carnegies and the rest. So it’s no accident today that the names you hear about, whether it’s Bill Gates, Mark Zuckerberg, Carlos Slim in Mexico, Jack Ma of Alibaba, are all people who are early riders of this emerging wave. The point I want to make, therefore, is that this is only just beginning. It will take some time for these tools and technologies to be democratised, commoditised and to be in the hands of ordinary people, and for the middle class to regain its wage-earning capacity, its productive capacity and its fair share of national wealth. So that is my hypothesis for what is currently happening in society and economics, and in the political arena as well.
11 Now let me cite a few examples. Many of these examples you will be familiar with, but they help make the point.
12 In the mobile banking space, many of you would have heard of Safaricom’s M-Pesa. Since Kenya’s M-Pesa brought banking-by-phone to Africa, this has grown from a novelty to a bona fide payment network. Even at a few dollars a transaction, mobile payments in sub-Saharan Africa will generate about US$1.5 bn in fees for mobile money providers by 2019, according to a report by the Boston Consulting Group. It was also reported that in sub-Saharan Africa, more people will have a mobile money account than Facebook account. Mobile phones are clearly spreading faster than bank branches, and especially in emerging markets like India, Bangladesh, Africa and other parts of Asia. It is no wonder therefore that many banks and telcos (such as Safaricom), and even Technology Giants (such as Google and Apple) are now focused on creating innovative financial services via the mobile channels.
13 If you move into the retail space, you’ve heard of the names: eBay, Amazon and Alibaba. Alibaba has come to dominate Internet Retailing in China, and frankly anyone who dominates any sector in China is going to be huge. Just to give you some idea of scale, Alibaba has moved beyond its remit of just connecting businesses to each other, which is how it started. It has moved far beyond that. It now allows companies to sell directly to the public, and for the members of the public to transact with each other. We’ve heard of Tmall, we’ve heard of Taobao. Taobao and Tmall processed 1.1 trillion yuan – which I think is about US$170 billion - in transactions in 2012, and in September 2014, Alibaba's market value was measured at US$231 bn. I am sure the numbers have changed since then, but these are numbers with many zeros.
14 In the crowdsourcing space, you have heard of Kickstarter and Indiegogo, and nowadays artists, entrepreneurs, communities, even people in trouble with the government can raise funds from crowdsourcing sites – to raise funds from the “4F Bank”. You know what the 4Fs are? Fans, Family, Friends and Fools. We laugh about it. But the point is that it allows everyone to mobilise funds and it goes far beyond this 4Fs, because in this world currently awash with liquidity and low interest rates, people are looking for ideas and services to take a bet on. According to the Crowdfunding Industry Report by Massolution, in 2012, US$2.7 bn was raised online through crowdfunding, and this number can only grow.
15 In the virtual currencies space, Rajendra mentioned Bitcoin, and I think you had a convention or a seminar on it. Frankly, I am not sure about the future of cryptocurrency, although clearly if you think about the way governments are managing paper currency, it doesn’t give you great confidence either. But actually what intrigues me more is the technology behind Bitcoin. I am not sure how many of you are familiar with the Blockchain Technology. Blockchain technology is a computational algorithm that enables distributed verification of the integrity of ledger items. Whether that item is a transfer of money, or cryptocurrency, or contracts, or services, it is in fact a generic platform technology which I believe has not yet found the most appropriate use case. But nevertheless, further breakthroughs in this area will open up the world and will disrupt services in a major way.
16 And for those of you who are involved in banking and finance, you know that some key competitive advantages which banks have had are (i) funds (ii) reputation (iii) some kind of protection by government regulations and (iv) knowing your customers’ businesses because you were lending them money - in other words you had access to information. But if you were to stop and think about it, what this technological wave has done is that it potentially disintermediates all those competitive advantages which banks and traditional financial institutions have had. You want access to funds, you can go to crowdfunding portals. As for having information on what businesses are doing, it is not just banks, and it is not just the consultants like Accenture, it is the people who have accurate pulse on the flow of bits, data, and transactions who know what is going on. I think David Lee was telling me just now that Alibaba employs hundreds of PhDs to do data mining. Is Alibaba really a retailer or is it actually in the information business? Are telcos really just selling you voice or are they preludes to the mobile banking business? Even Amazon or take any logistics company, are they really just delivering pizzas and electronics or are they really in the fulfilment business? So the point I am making is that if you can find the centre of gravity between money, information, fulfilment, and then the elusive quality called trust, that is where a huge focal point of opportunity is.
17 So I hope I have given you enough food for thought. I just want to appeal for you to do three things.
18 First, please for the sake of Singapore and Singaporean institutions, find new ways to deliver new services to our people and the people beyond Singapore. If our banks, financial institutions and businesses are doing exactly the same thing next year as they were doing last year, we are going to be swamped, because the pace of change is not slowing down. So please find new ways to deliver new services.
19 Second, please focus on this field of data science and data analytics. Whether you are a bank, financial institution, consultancy firm or university, we now live in the age of big data. And I used to joke with my medical colleagues that you almost do not need to do a clinical trial now, when you can measure the universe. Why settle for a sample and then engage in fancy statistical gymnastics to prove your conclusions, when you can measure everything in real time. So pay attention to data analytics and data science.
20 Third, we need more rational, careful, and technologically-based conversations on the issues of cybersecurity, protection of privacy, and especially protection of identity. Because you cannot have a world that is fully able to take advantage of financial innovations, information revolution, even electronic medical records, if a decent level of security, protection from identity theft, and protection from a loss of privacy and confidentiality is not guaranteed. In other words, security is the essential flip side of the coin of utility; and if we can get that done right here, then we have a head start.
21 So my final point is why Smart Nation. The answer is: we do so because we have no choice. Like many things we have done in Singapore for the last 50 years, all the way back to the time when Mr Sim Kee Boon was a pioneer senior civil servant working for Mr Lee Kuan Yew, we had to break new grounds, we had to be adventurous, we had to be innovative because we have no choice. Jobs were going to disappear in the early 1970s as the British forces pulled out of all ports east of the Suez, and that’s why we industrialised. Similarly, what I have described now is potentially another occasion when 20 to 30 percent of previously stable, good, middle class, white collar jobs are at risk because you cannot out-compete a robot, a machine, or a computer for routine, white collar work.
22 So we need to do all these things, and we believe we have an edge because we are small, and we have a single layer of government. Half of our cabinet ministers are engineers. Our PM is a mathematician who can still code. If you do not believe me, you can check his Facebook account and so far after five days, people have only found a little boundary error in his algorithm. But it is a very elegant program.
23 So the point is that we get it, we understand technology, we are not afraid of Science and Technology, but we need to have not just the PM coding, we need an entire society that is capable of understanding and exploiting the opportunities that this wave provides for us. So I wish you all the very best and I hope SMU, and especially the Sim Kee Boon Institute, continues to break new ground, not just because it is fun, but because it is essential for our continued prosperity and progress as a nation.
